The ‘We Are Buxton’ forum was an outcome of the first ‘Big Buxton Conversation’ hosted by Transition Buxton in 2021.
With the town having no parish or town council, the absence of a representative body and need for better links with our local councils was identified as a priority.
The forum was set up in conjunction with High Peak Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council and representatives from the larger community groups in the town including:
- Vision Buxton
- Buxton Civic Association
- Transition Buxton
- Buxton Town Team
- Residents of Fairfield Association
- Residents of Harpur Hill Association
- Churches Together in Buxton
- Accessible Buxton
- Connex Community Support
An invitation is also extended to the Member of Parliament for the High Peak.
A first meeting took place in September 2021. Meetings alternate between those between the various community groups and those with council representation.
The following issues have been raised at the meetings:
- Future High Streets project
- Market Street depot site
- the High Path and associated woodland along Bakewell Road
- the future of the Devonshire Dome
- transport issues such as electric car charging points and speed limits
- environmental issues such as retrofitting, biodiversity and air quality
- accessibility issues such as signage and mobility
In addition to the constructive meetings with local authority colleagues, the community groups are also in discussion about further collaborations, shared communications and resources.
“We all want the best for Buxton. Asking open questions and listening is so important in co-creating the place we all need, want and share. Through talking and working together we can achieve more.”
