Overflowing bins and a blanket of plastic cups and food containers on the Slopes, High Street and Market Place are familiar sights on Carnival day. As part of their ‘Plastic Clever Buxton‘ initiative, Transition Buxton would like to reduce the environmental impact of this popular day, and other community events such as the Buxton Spring Fair.
Carnival day (11 July this year) is a wonderful day for Buxton with thousands of visitors coming for the parade, musical entertainment and fun fair.
“It may take us ten years to find workable solutions to its environmental challenges, but it needs doing. It will require various parties to work together and contribute what they can which is why we are calling this meeting – we need to start somewhere.” Derek Bodey, Transition Buxton
Transition Buxton is calling a town meeting to try to ‘Clean up Carnival’ on Thursday 26 March from 7.30pm at the Buxton Methodist Church on the Market Place. All those interested are invited to attend the meeting to help identify the issues and challenges, propose ideas for possible solutions and if appropriate make pledges for this year’s Carnival day.
The Plastic Clever Buxton project is part of the Surfers Against Sewerage ‘Plastic Clever Towns’ initiative which aims to reduce the use of single-use plastics across businesses, schools, churches, community venues and groups throughout a town. Leader of the project committee, Derek Bodey says
“These community events are fantastic for Buxton but they do come at a cost to the environment and contribute to climate change. We need to find solutions to the complex issues and we need to start now. Please come and be part of the solutions”
