| Excited mums and dads queuing for refreshments before Buxton’s Awards Ceremony would have been surprised to learn another proud parent was serving them.
University Catering Technician Eileen Allsop was hard at work serving tea and cakes to graduates and parents under the Dome on the morning of December 1.
But a quick change saw her joining the rest of the parents for the afternoon ceremony, witnessing son Mark Allsop collect his 2:1 BA (Hons) Sports Studies degree.
Eileen – an employee of the University and its predecessor, High Peak College, for 27 years – said: “I was very proud of him. He did his degree while working full time.”
Mark, 29, of Buxton, took an HND at the campus before topping up to a full degree. He intends to return to the Devonshire Campus to do a masters degree.
He was among more than 170 students graduating before Professor John Coyne, University Vice-Chancellor and Chair of the Academic Board; Dianne Jeffrey, Pro Chancellor and Chair of the Governing Council; Professor David Gray, Dean of the Buxton faculty; distinguished colleagues and local dignitaries.
The Awards Ceremony followed a grand procession through Buxton led by the Fairfield Brass Band, which made its way to and from the Campus to St Anne’s Church for a non denominational service.
Accepting awards alongside students were veteran mountaineer Doug Scott and successful entrepreneur Emma Harrison, who both received Honorary Doctorates.
Addressing the students at the Buxton Awards Ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Professor Coyne said: “Graduation is a beginning not an end. There is more potential yet to be tapped.”
Dianne Jeffrey, Pro Chancellor and Chair of the Governing Council, told students: “You have helped us in our vision, to be a University of quality and opportunity for all. Congratulations.”
After the ceremony Professor Gray said: “Seeing the Dome set up like this it’s almost like it was built for the occasion.”

| Two 1st year BA (Hons) Culture and Heritage Tourism students, Fay Fallows and Kim Owen have been working hard this semester shadowing the outstanding Oral History Project at the University of Derby, Buxton, as part of their assessment.
The project, hosted at the Devonshire Campus, has been developed by the University of Derby Buxton in partnership with the local community as a response to the need to preserve and conserve the many memories of the Devonshire and the many people whose lives were influenced by this important building.
The three year project will involve hundreds of interviews with people about the Devonshire, exhibitions, historical research and work with local community groups.
As part of their assessment, Fay and Kim have spent three months liaising with project manager Liz Holland and the many volunteers, as well as conducting initial research on typologies of visitors to the Dome. Their research culminated in a poster presentation held in the Dome on Friday 6th December 2007, during which Fay and Kim assessed the roles and skills necessary to effectively manage such a magnificent project. Many visitors and staff from UDB joined them in the day and here is a sample of the comments gathered:
“Compliments to your most enthusiastic students. I was enthralled when I stopped to admire their display in the Dome yesterday. The display was most interesting. I had no idea about the project and its dimensions. The students were very informative.”
“This is going to be a really interesting project, there are so many people who have worked in the hospital over the years and who have been patients here.”

The University of Derby enjoyed a wonderful night as it competed for two top higher education ‘Oscars’.
The annual Times Higher Awards, run by the Times Higher Education Supplement, reward outstanding achievement.
We were shortlisted alongside Bedfordshire University, Edge Hill University, Essex University, Exeter University, and Glamorgan University in the coveted category of University of the Year. The eventual winner was Exeter University.
The University was also shortlisted in the category: Preparing for a Performance Culture – Outstanding Contribution to Leadership Development. The other finalists were Hertfordshire University, Oxford University, Edinburgh University, Teesside University and Aberdeen University; with the latter winning the title.
Although we did not win either category, the University is delighted to have received national recognition for an excellent year through being shortlisted for two awards.
Professor John Coyne, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Derby, was at the awards ceremony.
“It would have been a great boost to have won but it was not to be. Nevertheless we can all take great pride from just being there,” he said.

Flagship politics TV programme Question Time broadcast from the University’s Devonshire Campus in Buxton in November.
In a special for the BBC One programme, then Liberal Democrat leadership hopefuls Nick Clegg and Chris Huhne faced each other and the public’s questions in a debate chaired by Question Time host David Dimbleby.
This was before Mr Clegg was named as leader.
A live audience of around 150 people in the Dome at the University of Derby Buxton, had the chance to quiz the candidates in front of a TV audience of around 2.6million viewers.
Question Time’s visit to the campus came almost exactly two years after the venue was used by BBC Radio Four’s politics panel programme Any Questions?, chaired by Jonathan Dimbleby.
He declared after that show: "I can honestly say that I have never broadcast from a more spectacular venue in 20 years of Any Questions?"
Commenting on the preparations for Question Time’s arrival at the Dome, Christine Sweetmore, Development Manager at the University of Derby Buxton, said: "Working on Question Time was a great experience. The BBC work to extremely short
deadlines with final details received only a matter of days before the event, so as a team we have had to react and deliver very quickly.”

University Spa Shortlisted For Top Award
Spa staff at the University of Derby’s Devonshire Campus, Buxton, are keeping their fingers crossed after being shortlisted for a prestigious national award.
The Devonshire Spa, a training facility within the University of Derby Buxton site, is one of four finalists in the category of Day Spa Of The Year in Professional Beauty magazine’s 2008 annual awards.
It will be up against Eastthorpe Hall Health & Beauty Spa, West Yorkshire; KuBu of Oxfordshire; and the Waterfall Spa in Leeds.
The category recognises excellence amongst day spas not offering overnight accommodation.
Buxton’s Devonshire Spa delivers hairdressing, beauty and spa degree programmes for students who work in it alongside qualified stylists and therapists, offering professional treatments to the public at discount prices.
Its service will be tested by both a visit from a Professional Beauty magazine staff member, to sample the Devonshire Spa’s signature treatment, and later by a ‘mystery shopper’.
Amanda Garrington, Operations Co-ordinator at The Devonshire Spa, at the University of Derby Buxton, said: “This is among the top awards of the year for spa facilities.
“We’re pleased just to be shortlisted, because the standard of entry is very high.”
The winner of the Day Spa Of The Year award, and the contest’s 14 other categories, will be announced at a finalists’ dinner at The Platinum Suite, at the ExCel exhibition and conference centre in London, on Monday 3 March, 2008.

Consortium Could Mean ‘Sweeter Life’ For Food And Drink Firms
A sweet plan cooked up by the University and a confectionery firm could see large and small food and drink manufacturers reaping the rewards of working more closely together.
Business managers at the University of Derby Buxton are in talks with award winning Derbyshire sweets manufacturer Swizzels Matlow and others, about establishing a local Food Manufacturing Training Consortium.
It would aim to help food and drink manufacturers, whether small local producers or those linked to multi-national businesses, do better by working more closely together.
The proposed consortium would give companies involved in a similar line of work more chance to network and to share information, market research and best practice on staff development.
It’s anticipated that by working together consortium members would enjoy better opportunities for joint staff training, greater influence in accessing financial aid for businesses and more opportunities for smaller firms to develop.
An initial meeting has already been held at the University’s Devonshire Campus, Buxton, with more to follow.
Angela Crawford, Regional Business Development Manager at the University of Derby Buxton, said: “We have already worked closely with local food manufacturing firms to provide locally sourced, relevant training and development, and we have identified the need to do more for this sector in our area.”
The University of Derby Buxton and Swizzels Matlow have worked together on various staff training and related projects for more than two years and, in October 2006, were joint finalists at the Food and Drink Manufacture Excellent Awards in London.
Further information about the proposed Food Manufacturing Training Consortium can be found on the University of Derby’s website at www.derby.ac.uk/business-development-unit/news
