Buxton has an extremely strong community spirit with many diverse groups and organisations working in different areas to the benefit of the town as a whole. The Civic Association and the Buxton Group keep a close eye on potential developments, whilst the Volunteer Centre co-ordinates many projects involving large numbers of people. Most of the major charities have local groups raising money and great work is done locally, nationally and internationally by members of local church groups, Rotary, Round Table, the Lions and Freemasons. There is a really strong “live music scene” in a variety of venues around the town. Theatre, film, and youth groups (Click here to see more) thrive and numerous sporting activities are available from badminton to karate and football to canoeing (Peak Paddlers). Buxton is buzzing with arts and crafts people, many of whom are members of the High Peak Artists’ and Craftworkers’ Association whose home is currently in the Pump Room but will move to the Pavilion Gardens during 2009. A committee of volunteers raise money to improve Christmas Lights and organise a community switch on event, which in its turn raises money for the local hospice, Blythe House. Buxton’s Well dressings take place in July and a fantastic carnival is held throughout the town to raise money to keep this fascinating tradition alive for future generations. Also in July the world famous Buxton Opera Festival takes place, along with the Buxton Fringe, followed in August by the Gilbert and Sullivan Festival. Buxton Well Dressing Website. And last but by no means least – Buxton has a great gem in the person of Bill Weston MBE who, with the help of his Billerettes, has raised a huge amount of money for charity every year.
